Croatia's capital city would not be at the top on anyone's list of obvious city break destinations. And of course, alphabetically it's firmly at the bottom! But this vibrant and quirky metropolis is well worth a visit. This safe city is split into 3 areas - the Uppertown, Lowertown and Kapitol.
The Lowertown is a collection of green squares with the Botanical Gardens at the centre and contains most of the museums. Even if museums are not your thing, Zagreb may change your mind. Strange ones include the Museum of Broken Relationships, the Museum of Illusion and the Torture Museum, whilst tamer ones include the Technical Museum and the Museum of Contemporary Art. Also to be found here is the Flower Square, which is filled with cafes, flower sellers, musicians and buskers.
You'll notice the Cathedral looming over the Main Square in the Kapitol area. It dates back to the 11th Century. Down from the Cathedral is one of the highlights of Zagreb - the Dolac Market with its vast array of red canopies, under which you'll dicover traders selling their colourful fruits and vegetables, local honey, candle holders and lavender.
