TYPICAL 4 NIGHT ITINERARY

  • We greet you at Ljubljana or Zagreb Airport for the 90-minute drive to Maribor and our first night's accommodation.

  • From here it is just a short walk along the Drava River to our first tasting experience at The Old Vine House, where the oldest vine in the world grows.

  • This celebrated vine was planted more than 4 centuries ago and still bears grapes. The vine produces very little wine which is reserved for VIP's, dignitaries and famous people. It's been presented to popes, presidents, emperors and even Brad Pitt. We will sample superior wines from the Maribor wine region here.

  • After the tasting the evening is free for you to explore Slovenia's second city and European Capital of Culture 2012. There is plenty to see - the 15th-century castle, the 12th century cathedral, the Renaissance town hall, not forgetting numerous good wine bars! We can make suggestions for your evening meal where you'll discover Slovenian cuisine to be a unique mix of Balkan and Mediterranean styles.

DAY 1 - Arrive in Maribor, Slovenia
DAY 2 - To Austrian Styria, via a castle

  • After a leisurely breakfast, we'll leave Maribor for just a short drive through the Slovene countryside to award winning Dveri Pax at Jarenina Manor, a beautifully renovated 450-years-old castle.

  • Here in their wonderful purposely built tasting room we will taste a variety of wines which have won a host of prestigious prizes and are rapidly garnering international acclaim.

  • After a short drive into Styria, the greenest region of Austria, we enjoy lunch at a Buschenschank. This is a tavern where growers serve their own wines without having to pay any gastronomy license fees. A selection of cold meats, local bean salad with radish in pumpkin seed oil, homemade breads and cheeses will be served.

  • Our first Austrian destination is Skoff Original, run by Walter, who is the fourth generation of the family to manage their winery. He is an outstanding wine maker who produces a vast range of wines from his Classic, matured in stainless steel tanks to his Royal, made from hand-picked grapes from the best slopes and matured in new barriques, not forgetting his sparkling and dessert wines. Weather permitting we will have a brief tour of the vineyards.

  • When we tear ourselves away from Skoff it'll be to, hopefully, visit the Weingut Georgiberg estate, where the vines grow on gentle slopes, surrounded by green forests and quiet ponds. This estate is famous for its many first class red wines and its Blue Moscato sparkling wine (a rarity for Austria). Dinner will be at a local top quality restaurant, perhaps on a sun terrace if the weather is kind!

  • Just minutes from here is our night's accommodation, which enjoys magnificent views across the South Styrian countryside.

DAY 3 - To Varaždin in Croatia via Jeruzalem
  • Jeruzalem was named by the Crusaders who were so taken with the area that they decided to settle there, proclaiming that they had found their Jerusalem. And you will see why, with amazing landscapes - it really is a little piece of heaven. Our morning journey takes us over the border from Austria, back into Slovenia and to the wine growing area of Podravje of which Ljutomer-Ormož is a district and where the village of Jeruzalem lies. We will have a quick stop here to visit the church and take some photos, then it's off to Vineyard Cottage Malek owned by P&F Wineries.

  • Here we'll sample wines from their extensive range in a building that's more than 300 years old and contains a house chapel with a conserved fresco.  P & F were awarded 'Slovenian Wine Producer of the Year' at the New York International Wine Competition in October 2016, and have won numerous Decanter awards. We'll enjoy a lunch of locally sourced breads, cheeses and charcuterie here, after which we'll travel to our next destination, which is in Croatia.

  • Our lodgings are in the beautiful old town of Varaždin and it's here we'll head to first, to check in and have a couple of hours' free time.

  • Later that afternoon, we'll drive to the stunning hilltop location where Bolfan Vinksi Vrh is situated.

  • A creative and imaginative evening meal awaits us which will complement our introduction to Croatian wines. Bolfan has been named by the Winerist as one of the 6 best organic and biodynamic wineries to visit in Europe.

Day 4 - To Sparkling Wine Territory
  • This morning we make the 90-minute journey back over the border, where our final destination is one of the finest and oldest producers of quality sparkling wines in Slovenia, to the town of Gornja Radgona

  • Radgonske Gorice have been making sparkling wines for over 150 years and produce both traditional (bottle fermented) and tank-fermented wines. Here we will take a tour of the cellars, named -  Under the Roman Wheel, Under the Waterfall and Under the Rock, which offer an unusual and special setting for our wine tasting.

  • Gornja Radgona's twin town is Bad Radkersburg, across the border in Austria. After our tasting and lunch we will have the opportunity to explore here. The town is a unique mixture of splendid historical buildings alongside refreshing and contemporary town-life with inviting shops and cafes. Alternatively, we can head to our spa hotel, where we will be spending the night to take in their thermal indoor pool, sauna and spa area.

  • Our final evening will be spent at a Gostilnja Slovenija. This is a high standard restaurant, where local dishes, grills, vegetarian plates and a la carte options can be found on the menu.

  • After breakfast, and depending on the time of your return flight home, you may use the hotel facilities.

  • At this time, we will take orders for any wines you can't fit in your case! These will be shipped over for you to be enjoyed at home and maybe share with friends.

  • Afterwards, we'll drive you to your chosen departure airport.

  • Of course, you could choose to extend your stay to include a city break in either Ljubljana or Zagreb. Or why not spend some time at Slovenia's best known tourist destination - Lake Bled?

  • We can arrange accommodation for you and get you to your next location. All part of the service!
